Homemade Maple Flavoured Syrup

A few months back I found - make your own maple syrup recipes on Pintrest that interested me.  I tried this one:

The Recipe:  from http://www.mykitchenescapades.com/

My Directions:
  • 1 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring (found by vanilla)
  1. Add sugar and water to a pan
  2. Boil for 1 minute (do not stir)
  3. Remove from heat and add maple flavoring
My Alterations:

I added less maple flavoring.  I cut the original recipe in half.  The original calls for 1 1/4 tsp. of maple flavoring.  When I halved it I added 1/2 tsp.

Next time I will add equal amounts white and brown sugar.  In this case 1/2 cup white and 1/2 cup brown.  I will also boil for 2 min. (hopefully to thicken it up a bit).
My Serving Suggestions:

Pancakes (also found a great recipe I will post soon)

Waffles

French Toast

Coffee / Tea

Bananas

My Review:
Pros:
  • quick and easy
  • tastes like syrup (imitation)
  • kids love it
  • I like the amount half a recipe made
  • fits in a ball jar
Cons:
  • A bit thin for my liking
Is this real Maple Syrup?  No.  Is it similar to Aunt Jamima?  Yes.  My husband enjoyed it and my kids wanted to like the plate.

Would I make this again?

 Yes
with alterations
